The French settlers are to be thanked for bringing Mardi Gras to New Orleans.
It was in about 1723 that the capital of Louisiana was moved there. It is now very closely associated with the city which now sometimes answers to the name of “Big Easy”.
Mardi Gras celebrations include lots of street parties, Mardi Gras Parades, music and of course eating Mardi Gras Food! There are lots of festivities to enjoy and diverse costumes to wear.

There are other cities and towns that have a carnival. Even in a small village in Scotland, they have a carnival type parade at New Year. The village is called Comrie, which is set in amongst the beautiful hills of Perthshire. Just before midnight on December 31st, the pipe band march along the main street, leading the way for the flambeaux procession. Then following on are several floats with the local people dressing up as something topical, and normally very amusing. It’s great fun to watch, and the village is full with hundreds of people who come especially to watch. After parading all around the village, the flambeaux are thrown over the bridge and into the river Earn, where they float along down stream to the next village, taking with them all the evil spirits. It’s a great excuse to dress up and party!
